Children’s Day 2022 – Join Us, Tuesday December 20th at 5:30 p.m.

Children’s Day and Candlelight Celebration

Children, family and friends are warmly invited to a Candlelight Celebration of the Winter Solstice, on the eve of Children’s Day, December 20, at 5:30 pm, at the Halifax Shambhala Centre.

Our Candlelight Celebration marks the Winter solstice.  For those of us north of the equator, is the time when we’re farthest from the sun in our yearly cycle; it marks our shortest day and longest night. There is a pause, ever so brief, before the sun once again begins to appear higher and brighter in our sky. For as long as any stories tell us, humans have celebrated both this pause (quiet, darkness), and the return of light and warmth.

Because the daylight has waned and the nights are longest, light is a special characteristic of this celebration. This is why we come together to share the light; candle light, community, and the light that shines so brightly from our children, as well as the light within us.

When you arrive, please wear a mask, particularly when in motion, to promote healthy holidays for everyone. You are encouraged to arrive with full bellies as food will not be served.. Seated little ones may snack, just no sharing, please. Cushions will be arranged in pods and distanced.

Gifts for Phoenix House residents would be gratefully accepted. Basic hygiene items like new toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant (really!) and warm socks or gently used adult clothing, suitable for a gift.

TENDER HEART

Your heart is tender sad and true,

No brighter sun can be shown to you.

The light of day will come and go,

The light of tender heart will grow.

It will grow as slowly as an ancient tree,

It will fly like a bird that is suddenly free.

Like the rising sun that ends the night,

A tender heart is forever bright.
