The Life and Teachings of Khenpo Gangshar

with Venerable Changling Rinpoche

We are very happy and fortunate that after a 5-year gap Venerable Changling Rinpoche is returning to Halifax to teach us! Rinpoche will give vajrayana teachings based on the Life and Teachings of Khenpo Gangshar Wangpo, who was one of the primary teachers of the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

Khenpo Gangshar Wangpo was a renowned scholar and mahasiddha from Shechen Monastery in Tibet. In 1956, he came to Surmang to teach the Vidyadhara and also to teach at the new seminary there. During that time, he became very ill and appeared to have died. Amazingly, he returned to life and his personality changed dramatically. Once a respected scholar and model of a proper monastic, he began to manifest as a crazy-wisdom guru, teaching much more publicly and sometimes acting outrageously in order to push his students to realization during the tumult of the changing times. He was later imprisoned by the Chinese army and died in captivity in 1961.

Changling Rinpoche has visited and taught in Halifax and Dorje Denma Ling three times. He taught Khenpo Gangshar Wangpo’s Naturally Liberating Whatever You Meet at Dorje Denma Ling in 2008, 2009, and 2010. During his last visit, Rinpoche presented teachings on the Vidyadhara’s The Sadhana of Mahamudra at the Halifax Shambhala Centre.

Changling Rinpoche will also teach us on “Death and How to Die,” on Monday, October 12.

Changling Rinpoche was born in 1977 in Kalimpong, India. At the age of ten, he was recognized by His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Penor Rinpoche as the principal tülku of Changchub Ling Nyingma monastery in Central Tibet. He is a lineage holder of the Rechung Kagyü, which is based on the transmission of Milarepa’s disciple Rechungpa, who received the formless dakini teachings. Rinpoche is also a lineage holder of the Nyingma Northern Treasure (Changter) tradition, which is based on the terma of Rigdzin Gödemchen.

Changling Rinpoche entered Shechen Tennyi Dargye Ling Monastery in Nepal, where he received teachings and transmissions from His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche until His Holiness’s parinirvana in 1991. When Rinpoche was twelve years old, he entered the Shechen shedra and completed his studies at the age of twenty-one. He has continued to teach at the shedra, and has studied with Trülshik Rinpoche, Rabjam Rinpoche, and other teachers. Rinpoche is in charge of teaching monastics the ritual tradition and ceremonies of the Shechen lineage. Rinpoche has also been teaching with Yangsi Dilgo Khyentse and Rabjam Rinpoches in Croatia. In addition, he has taught in Australia and North America, and has been teaching within our Shambhala mandala since 2005.

Changling Rinpoche teaches in English, and will give several audiences for tantrikas and sadhakas while he is here. Rinpoche is an excellent translator and during this visit he will continue to work with the Nalanda Translation Committee on translating The Collected Works of Khenpo Gangshar Wangpo.

Transcripts of Rinpoche’s previous teachings on Khenpo Gangshar from 2008 & 2009 at DDL are available here for 2008 & here for 2009. Transcripts of Rinpoche’s teachings on The Sadhana of Mahamudra from 2010 are available here.

These transcripts, as well as new transcripts of his teachings on Khenpo Gangshar from 2010 at DDL, will also be available at the teachings at the Shambhala Centre on Thanksgiving weekend.
