Daily Meditation

Dear Friends – I wanted to write to you about two shifts occurring in the realm of practice here at the centre.

1. After many years, Robert Halpern is stepping away from his responsibilities as a daily umdze. Naturally, this leaves quite a gap, as Robert has single-handedly held the timekeeper seat morning and evening for many years. We are taking this opportunity to simplify our daily sitting, and bring our forms into alignment with the rest of the mandala. We also see this as an opportunity for more members to share their heart’s connection with Shambhala through leading this daily community activity.When this transition occurs, we will be hosting a morning sitting Monday thru Friday 7:30-8:30am and an evening session Monday thru Friday 5:30-6:30pm. There will be no Saturday sitting. If you would like to staff one of these sessions, please contact Meg Vigerstad: meg.vigerstad@gmail.com or 902-423-0368 Training will be provided for anyone who would like to learn how to lead a meditation session.

2.The second transition is that of Ron Renz who has been holding the Sunday sitting for a little while. Ron will be moving up to Gampo Abbey and so we are looking for someone to take the reins from him. Please let me know if you would be interested in taking on the Sunday Sitting organization, which at this point is a fairly self-sufficient situation. Sitting Meditation

Our open meditation practice consists of silent sitting, alternating with brief periods of walking meditation, concluding with brief chant of dedication.

First-time meditators are welcome and encouraged to attend our weekly Open House for meditation instruction.   There is no charge and no need to register.   For more information, read about Open House: Taste of Shambhala

Public Meditation Schedule

Weekday Meditation

Give yourself a gift of daily space. Open to all, no charge.

Monday – Friday: 7 to 8:15 am, 9 to 10 am, and 5 to 6:15 pm.

Note that the room location for evening practice may change depending on availability at the time.  Check with the receptionist when you arrive for that evening’s location.

Weekend Morning Meditation

Every weekend, the Shambhala Centre offers a group session of sitting practice.

Saturday mornings from 7 to 8:15 am – Mindfulness-awareness meditation.  Open to all, no charge.

Sunday mornings from 9 am to noon – Mindfulness-awareness meditation alternates with brief periods of walking meditation, led by an experienced meditation student or instructor.  Individual meditation instruction is also available, with a meditation instructor on site.  Open to all, no charge.

Note that the centre room location for meditation practice may change depending on availability at the time.  Verify when you arrive for that morning’s location.

Going further

  • Sadhana of Mahamudra  – In this powerful hour-long practice, we chant a liturgy composed by the Vidyadhara Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, which connects us with the Kagyü and Nyingma lineages of enlightened Vajrayana Buddhist teachers. 

    Conducted on the full and new moon of every month. Open to all.  Refer to the Centre calendar for upcoming dates.

  • Maitri Bhavana – Meditation practice for those that are critically ill. 

    Second Sunday of the month at 10 am (as scheduled), included in Sunday Morning Meditation.  Refer to the Centre newsletter for upcoming dates.
