What is Meditation Instruction?
Meditation instruction at the Halifax Shambhala Centre is training in the practice of mindfulness-awareness meditation, as handed down in the Buddhist tradition and taught in all Shambhala centres internationally.
This includes presenting the technique for meditation, as well as discussing how one can integrate meditation into life "off the cushion." It is importamt to note that while there are many well-known psychological and physical benefits to meditation, the meditation instructions provided here is not psychotherapy or medical advice.
The Shambhala Centre offers meditation instruction both individually and in a group setting.
During the course of various programs such as Open House and Way of Shambhala programs, teachers devote some time to guiding the group through the physical and mental aspects of meditation.
Certain programs include individual meetings with a meditation instructor to ensure that each participant understands what is being presented. The meeting also provides particpants an opportunity to discuss questions they may prefer to talk about privately.
As people become more committed to meditation practice, they may want to meet with the same instructor on a regular basis outside of programs. This affords an opportunity to work with one person whose training and experience as an instructor can support their practice and development as a meditator.
A meditation instructor can also provide assistance in developing a path of study, guidance on how to choose which classes and programs to attend, recommendation for reading, and information about other community activities.
If you would like to meet with a meditation instructor individually, you may ask an instructor directly, or request a meditation instructor by completing a Request for Meditation Instructor card available at the front desk of the Shambhala Centre. You may also call the Halifax Centre with your request.
